Intonation problems are one of the most common complaints from capo users — and most of them trace back to improper tension. Here's how to fix it.
What Happens With Wrong Tension
Too Tight: The capo squeezes the strings too hard against the frets, pulling each string sharp. Your open chords will sound out of tune with the rest of the band.
Too Loose: Strings don't make full contact with the frets, causing buzzing or muting.
Just Right: Strings ring cleanly, open chords are in tune, and the capo moves quickly.
How to Adjust the PGL Capo
The PGL Tension Adjustable Capo has a textured tension wheel on the side. Turn clockwise to increase tension, counterclockwise to decrease.
1. Place the capo at the desired fret 2. Play an open G chord (or any chord with multiple strings) 3. Check tuning with a chromatic tuner 4. If strings are sharp, loosen tension slightly 5. If strings buzz, tighten tension slightly 6. Repeat until all strings ring cleanly in tune
Different Guitars Need Different Settings
A low-action guitar needs less tension than a high-action guitar. A classical guitar neck is wider and may need a different capo style entirely. The PGL capo's adjustable tension accommodates the vast majority of acoustic and electric guitar setups.
Quick Tip for Live Performance
Set your preferred tension at home before the service or show. Mark the tension wheel position with a small dot of nail polish if you want to return to it quickly.
