Guitars are fragile. A dropped box or a hot car trunk can destroy a $2,000 instrument in minutes. Here's how to protect yours in every scenario.
Choosing the Right Case
Gig Bag: Padded fabric bag. Lightweight, convenient, minimal protection. Good for short trips, low-risk environments.
Hard Case (Plywood or Molded): The standard for serious musicians. Significant impact protection. Acceptable for car transport and airline baggage.
ATA Road Case: Steel-reinforced, nearly indestructible. Used by touring professionals. Heavy and expensive.
Before Storing Long-Term
1. Clean the fretboard and condition if unfinished (rosewood/ebony) 2. Slightly loosen string tension (a half step is enough — completely removing tension can shift neck relief) 3. Apply a thin coat of guitar polish to the body 4. Store in a case with proper humidity (45-55%) 5. Keep away from temperature extremes (not in a garage or attic)
Shipping a Guitar
1. Detune strings by a step or two 2. Loosen the truss rod slightly to reduce tension 3. Fill the interior of the case with packing material (bubble wrap, foam) 4. Double-box: guitar case inside a shipping box with 2" of packing material on all sides 5. Mark FRAGILE on all sides 6. Purchase shipping insurance
