How to Use a Guitar Stand Safely: Avoiding the 5 Most Common Accidents

Guitar stands prevent damage — or cause it if used incorrectly. This guide covers safe placement, weight distribution, and protecting your finish from stand contact.

A guitar stand is supposed to protect your instrument, but improper use leads to scratched finishes, toppled guitars, and broken headstocks every day. Here's how to use yours safely.

Choose the Right Stand for Your Guitar

Not every stand fits every guitar. A stand designed for dreadnought acoustics may not support an odd-shaped bass or an archtop. The PGL X-Frame Stand accommodates acoustic, electric, bass, and classical guitars with its universal design.

Surface Matters

Stands on carpet are more stable than on hardwood or tile. On a slick stage surface, make sure the stand feet have rubber grips. The PGL X-Frame features rubber-footed legs to prevent sliding.

The 5 Most Common Stand Accidents

1. Foot traffic knock-over: Place the stand away from walkways, especially on busy stages. Set it behind the guitarist's position if possible.

2. Neck yoke chemical damage: Some rubber and foam yoke materials react with certain guitar finishes (especially nitrocellulose lacquer). PGL uses sponge padding that is guitar-finish safe.

3. Improper folding with guitar on it: Never fold or move an X-frame stand with the guitar resting on it. Always remove the guitar first.

4. Placing on uneven surfaces: Even a slight tilt can cause a stand to tip under vibration (from drums, bass, HVAC). Check level before leaving your guitar unattended.

5. Overloading rack stands: Multi-guitar racks have weight limits. Never exceed the manufacturer's recommendation.
