Sound check is the most important 20 minutes of your Sunday. Most worship guitarists waste it. Here's how to make every second count.
Before You Arrive at Sound Check
- Fresh strings (change at least the day before, not morning-of — they need time to stretch) - Capo tensions pre-set for each song that needs one - Pedalboard fully tested at home - Cable connected, pedals powered on - Spare cable and 9V battery in your bag
The Sound Check Sequence
1. Check the connection first: Plug in and play a note before anything else. Confirm signal is getting to the desk.
2. Set your clean tone: Strum rhythm chords at the volume and intensity you'll actually play during service — not softer. The sound tech is setting levels for your real playing, not a timid strumming test.
3. Test your drive/distortion: If you use the PGL GP-HGD-01 during any song, engage it during sound check so the tech knows to expect that level change.
4. Listen to your monitor mix: Make sure you can hear yourself clearly. Too much guitar in your monitor means you'll overplay; too little means you'll push harder than needed.
5. Walk the room if possible: Ask the tech to hold a moment while you walk away from the stage and listen to your guitar in the room. This is revealing.
Common Sound Check Mistakes
- Playing too softly during check (then playing normally during service = level spike) - Not testing all your pedal combinations - Spending time tweaking during check instead of communicating with the tech - Ignoring the monitor mix because "it'll be fine"
Communicating with Your Sound Tech
The tech is your partner. Be specific: "Can I have more me and less keys in my monitor?" is better than "my monitor sounds weird."
After Sound Check
Leave your capo at the correct fret for the first song. Tune one more time right before service starts (temperature changes can affect pitch).
